Planning for exams
Students with type 1 diabetes may need extra support and special consideration during exams and tests. Glucose levels that are higher or lower than the student’s target range can affect their concentration and mental performance during exams. It is important to plan for exams and assessments so students with type 1 diabetes have access to the tools they need to manage their diabetes.
Schools should be guided by details outlined in a student’s diabetes management plan. For example, a student will need access to their glucose checking equipment, diabetes supplies and may consider applying for extra time to manage their glucose levels during an exam.
Student rights during exams
Student rights during exams are different in each state and territory.
Most states and territories have set allowances or provisions for major exam settings to cater for the needs of students with type 1 diabetes. Make sure the student and their parents or carers are aware of this and that they fill out the necessary paperwork well in advance of these exams.
For further information on a student’s rights during exam periods visit your state or territory’s school curriculum and standards authority website.

Reasonable adjustments
Schools are required to make reasonable adjustments for students with type 1 diabetes. These may include:
- making sure the student is informed of additional support available to them prior to an exam or assessment
- discussing any special considerations required for exams and assessments in advance with the principal
- allowing the student to take drinks and snacks into an exam or assessment to use as necessary
- allowing the student to use a mobile phone to monitor their glucose levels
- ensuring the student can take their insulin supplies into the exam or assessment for use as necessary or wear their insulin pump in the examination room (pump should always be worn)
- allowing the student additional time if required for supervised rest breaks to treat a low or high glucose level
- allowing the student to check their glucose level before commencing exam or assessment
- allowing the student to have unrestricted toilet access during an exam or assessment
- considering change of assessment time if glucose levels are unstable
- providing the student with extra time to complete work if glucose levels are unstable.
Make sure all exam supervisors are aware of the student’s need to check glucose levels and that they may need to eat during the assessment.
